Why does the hallway lane come back grey a week after shampooing?

Usually it was never rinsed out. Shampoo left in the pile stays sticky. Greasy urban dust and traffic soot bond to that residue fast. Cut pile nylon and polyester in bedrooms hides it. Hallway lanes and entries show it first. So we pre-vacuum dry, then pre-spray, agitate, and extract until the return water runs clear.

Grey lines along baseboards and under doors are a different problem. That is filtration soiling from forced-air return. Air pulls through the carpet edge and drops soot there. It sits in the tip of the yarn and needs edge-specific work, not a wand pass. Some of it is permanent. We say so before starting.

Method depends on the unit. Older converted buildings and leasing offices with low-pile glue-down get encapsulation or low-moisture work when windows barely open. Hot-water extraction elsewhere, since the dry air here pulls moisture out quickly. Near the coastal fringe the marine layer slows drying, so we plan airflow first.

Pet urine is not a shampooing job. It reaches pad, tack strip, and subfloor. Enzyme treatment and sealing on slab or raised wood follow. Area rugs over refinished oak come up and get cleaned off the floor.
